About Myself

I am a graduate from the University of Washington with a Fine Arts degree in Painting.  I have lived in the Pacific Northwest my whole life, which has had a huge impact on my artwork.  I have many memories from my childhood of hiking, camping, and tromping through the woods with my older brother. Nature has always fascinated me, and continues to inspire me. Now that I currently live in Seattle, I find myself recalling these memories and beginning to recreate worlds that I once experienced.  I continue to take pictures, make sketches, and record my interaction with nature whether it is encounters in the city, trips I go on, or weekend hiking excursions. I take a piece back with me and create my own world in painting.

Throughout my life, I have always been drawn to nature, and at this point in my artistic career, I have allowed myself to create my own individual worlds in my paintings based off of these fantastic memories. Please explore my website to learn and see more of my art world.

Artist Statement

My art is based off of my present surroundings – the natural world and its physicality.  I tend to build up surfaces and am uninhibited from changing things in my paintings. Most of my paintings consist of repeating verticals in a landscape. These are my own representations of “trees.” I am not trying to make a statement about our natural environment, but am taking interesting parts of it and creating my own image. I am also fascinated by surface quality and texture – what makes a painting evident as a physical object.

My paintings tell a story about where they have been and how they have changed; this is a reflection of where I have been as a person and the various challenges I have had to face. Without obstacles in my life, my art wouldn’t exist. It is life's imperfections that create energy for good art making. Art has a natural way of balancing me.

I have images of my physical surroundings layered within my head, which I then create a new place for.  Not a place that actually exists, but a place that seems familiar.  I see the world a certain way, and am interested in nature and the organic.  I want others to have a glimpse of the beauty I see and so try to create it for them in my abstracted landscapes.
